Tony Stewart, also known as Smoke, thinks that NASCAR should run Nextel Cup cars in the dirt.
I for one, would hate to see it.
Stewart's "Prelude to the Dream" race next Wednesday, June 6 at his Eldora Speedway is fast becoming one of the must attend or see or drive in, races of the season. If your planning to attend, you needed a ticket a while ago. You can watch though, pay per view, on HBO live. And if you are a big name racin' car driver, better get your name in for next year, as IRL pilot Buddy Rice found out when he called Tony and found no seats remaining.
The success of "The Prelude" is a fantastic accomplishment for Stewart and a terrific opportunity for racing fans to see their idols outside the regular format.
Tony thinks that NASCAR should make dirt racing a part of the Nextel Cup series.
We run road courses with cars that aren't really supposed to be run on road courses, so why not run them on dirt? It makes sense to do that."
Scene Daily has the rest of the article. I have a problem with the idea.
The ARCA RE/MAX series currently runs a schedule of races featuring super speedways Daytona and Talladega, intermediate mile and a half tracks, short tracks and two dirt tracks. It is a wonderful and unique racing series. I don't think that the Nextel Cup series should emulate the niche that ARCA has carved out for itself.
If NASCAR decides to revamp the Busch (soon to be sold for $30 MM) series with some combination of composite bodies and pony car silhouettes or whatever then maybe a couple dirt races would help to differentiate that show from the big one.
The Cup series should be about long, fast races at big venues. That doesn't mean that Cup races will always be the most interesting racing of the weekend.
HHMMMM. I have never really thought about dirt tracks in the Cup. I will have to give that some thought.
As for the "Prelude to the Dream" race. I wish I could see it. But I won't be there and I will not pay to see (Pay Per View)...although it is tempting!! OK, Maybe I will....Maybe. NO I WON'T. Maybe they won't offer it in my area!
OK, I jus looked and it is the first listed PPV show. I still don't think I will watch it.
